The inscription states: "In memory of the 155 miners and 1 rescuer who lost their lives in the Minnie Pit Disaster January 12th 1918 - Also all who lost their lives in the extraction of coal from this mine" The capped shaft of the Minnie Pit is only a few yards away http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/799717.
